Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group

Vision, Mission and Goals – 2006

 

VISION: Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group envisions the Hood Canal Watershed as a place of peace and plenty where the waters are teeming with life, the environmental quality is high, the fishery is one of the best in the world and the entire community actively supports conservation and participates in the preservation of the health of Hood Canal. Adopted in 1998, modified in 1999 and 2005.

 

 

MISSION: To perpetuate and enhance the genetic diversity and stocks of Wild Salmon in Hood Canal through the protection and restoration of salmon habitat, stewardship and research for watershed and marine ecosystems, community education and outreach, and any other means appropriate. Adopted in 1990, modified in 1999, 2002 and 2003.

 

 

LONG TERM GOALS:

 

1.        Partner & participate in the design & implementation of restoration plans for all species of Wild Salmon native to the Hood Canal Watershed. Modified in 2005.

 

2.        Research, preserve and restore Hood Canal marine and freshwater ecosystems to enhance Wild Salmon abundance. Modified in 2005.

 

3.        To foster resource stewardship, dissemination of public information and community outreach, for Wild Salmon in the Hood Canal Watershed. Modified in 2005.

 

4.        To develop a self-sustaining Scholarship and Internship Program. Modified in 2005.

 

5.        Actively support the creation of the Pacific Northwest Salmon Center (PNWSC) featuring a Wild Salmon Hall of Fame.  Adopted in 1999 and modified in 2002, 2003 and 2005.

 

 

 

HCSEG is one of 12 original Salmon Enhancement Groups (now there are 14) created by legislation in 1990 – RCW 75.50, 77.95 and WAC 220.140.  The RFEG’s were tasked with supplementation, habitat restoration, research and education.  HCSEG became a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit corporation in November 1990.

 

 Projects and goals of the HCSEG are developed in conjunction with the managers of the Salmon Resource including DNR, DOE, HCCC, Hood Canal Tribes, IAC, Jefferson, Kitsap & Mason Counties, LLTK, MCD, NFWF, NOAA, PSAT, USFS, USFWS, UW/APL, WDFW, WDOT, and others.  Sixteen years of working together to make a better future for the wildlife and communities.
