Board Members
HCSEG Board Members | President, Jim Culver Jim Culver is a retired Professional Forester who started his career in 1960 as a District Ranger for the U.S Forest Service and moved on to become Resource Manager and Logging Superintendent for Michigan-California Lumber Company. In the late 1960's he formed a small firm, preparing natural resource baselines for use in the preparation of regional land use plans. He retired in 1993 as President and Chairman of the Board of the firm LSA Associates Inc. that had grown from three employees to two hundred and fifty-eight. In 1992, he was appointed to the California State Board of Forestry and Fire Protection where the majority of his effort was focused on improving forest practices in the forested watersheds of the California coastal range to protect the badly degraded habitat of coho salmon. In retirement, much of his work has been in watershed management and restoration. Jim first served as a Board Member and Executive Committee Member of the Pacific Rivers Council, and later as a Board Member of Integrated Environmental Restoration Services, a small firm that in partnership with U.C. Davis has been developing innovative erosion control techniques for maintenance of the water quality in the Lake Tahoe Basin. He previously served as a Board Member and President of the HCSEG, and re-joined the HCSEG Board in 2009. |  | Vice President, Dan O'Neal is the founder of Power Tech Group Inc..He is also a member of the Board of Directors of The Greenbrier Companies. He is the current Chairman of the WA state Transportation Commission and serves on HCSEG's Executive Committee. Dan earned his Law Degree from University of Washington and received a BA in Mathematics. Dan has been actively involved with the HCSEG as a board member since 2003. |  | Treasurer, Richard S. Chwaszczewski Richard Chwaszczewski is an Engineering Manager and Assistant Vice President with Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC). His office supports the submarine silencing for the Navy. Rich is a retired naval officer who served in submarines, at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, and for a naval laboratory. He is a new resident of Belfair, having lived nearly 30 years on Vashon Island, before running a horse ranch in Port Orchard, then moving to Belfair. Rich is married to the former Beth Van Leeuwen of Bremerton. They have three sons, Mike, Ken, and Max. Rich is active in Washington State wrestling as a match and tournament announcer. The last ten years he has announced the annual Mat Classic State Tournament in the Tacoma Dome. In addition, Rich is a co-owner of a concrete construction company - MPC Construction Company LLC - with his youngest son, Max.
|  | | Secretary, Michelle Licari Michelle Licari co-manages the science lab at Olympic College- Poulsbo Campus. Michelle has been a volunteer for HCSEG in research studies including; biotic assessment of nearshore echinoderms species, HCDOP and HCSEG supplementation projects. Michelle has been involved with the HCSEG as a board member since 2004. |  | Board Member, Dr. Al Adams Al Adams is a retired dentist. He served as the HCSEG Executive Director for four years. He is currently the Vice President of Pacific Northwest Salmon Center. He currently serves on the education and habitat committees, and is the Chair of the PNWSC Wild Salmon Hall of Fame selection committee. Al maintains active involvement with HCSEG and serves as an advisor to our executive committee. Al has been a HCSEG board member since 1995. |  | Board Member, Bob Hager Bob Hager is a retired Boeing Vice President, and was a consultant for NASA. He has served as Board Treasurer for the HCSEG and the PNWSC. He currently serves on the finance and foundation committees and as an advisor to the executive committee. Bob additionally volunteers his talents with the Hood Canal Dissolved Oxygen Program and serves on the Lower Hood Canal Watershed Implementation Committee. Bob has been involved with the HCSEG as a board member since 1996. |  | Board Member, Bob Sund Bob Sund is a retired teacher & coach with 30 years in public school education . Currently Bob serves on the HCSEG legislative committee and is an active member of the HCSEG and Kiwanis. Bob received his Bachelors Degree from Univ. of Puget Sound and his Masters from the Univ. of WA. He has worked for the Mason County Planning Commission for the last 12 years. Bob has been involved with the HCSEG as a board member since 1996. |  | Board Member, Paul Ancich Is a semi-retired commercial fishing captain who has logged over 40 thousand hours of sea-time from the Northern Bering Sea chasing Herring to Catalina Island lighting for Squid; the majority of his fishing time spent in the Aleutians fishing for Salmon, Pacific Cod and Tanner Crab. Paul serves as Chair of the Washington State's Regional Fisheries Enhancement Group's Advisory Board, is a former member of the Governor's Forum on Monitoring Salmon Recovery and Watershed Health where he played a key role in the development of the Habitat Status and Trends Framework document developed for the Salmon Recovery Funding Board, by the Department of Ecology and the Department of Fish and Wildlife. Paul also currently serves as a member of WDFW's Lands Management Advisory Council, is a General Contractor, High School Varsity Tennis Coach and with his fishing vessel 'Memories', provides a platform for the latest mid-water Trawl research in Hood Canal currently undertaken between the University of Washington, WDFW and HCSEG. |  | Board Member, Larry De Paul Larry De Paul was born and raised in Whatcom County, Washington. He attended Bellingham High School, Western Washington University, Gemological Institute of America, Page Navigational School. US Naval Fire Fighting and Damage Control School, Texas A & M Standard Marine Fire School, USMM Radar School, and Texas A & M Advanced Marine Fire School. Larry was a partner in a jewelry manufacturing & retail company, art gallery, and an import/export Corporation. After retiring from those three businesses, Larry joined the US Merchant Marines and worked for ARCO Marine starting as a Messman, working his way through the ranks until 81/2 years later he had earned a USMM Master's or Captain's license. He continued to sail as a Navigation and Medical Officer until he retired in 1992. He then purchased Cady Lake and built his Fly Fishing Resort, Cady Lake Manor, which he continues to operate. Larry became a board member in 2009. |  | Board Member, Joel Pillers Joel Pillers is a graduate of University of Nevada, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Wildland Recreation Management. He started working for the National Parks Service in 1976. He worked at the Nevada State Parks Department from 1977 to 1983. At that time, he relocated to work for Washington State Parks, and is currently the Area Manager for Belfair and Twanoh State Parks. Joel received the Hood Canal Coordinating Council's Environmental Achievement Award in 2006. He and his wife, Mona, enjoy fishing, scuba diving, motorcycling and canoeing. He is the proud parent of two; Seth, a graduate of the University of Washington, and Katherine, a graduate of Seattle Pacific University. Joel became a HCSEG Board Member in 2009. |  | Board Member, Tom Brown Tom moved to Belfair several years ago after spending much of his life in Bremerton. A Washington native, he graduated from University of Washington with a degree in Atmospheric Sciences. He worked at the Naval Shipyard as a Nuclear Engineering Manager and is now retired. His wife, Dorinda, is also a longtime resident of the area. Besides volunteering at HCSEG he is one of the North Mason Cancer Crusaders. He enjoys fishing, hiking and the outdoors. |  | Board Member, Bruce Moran Bruce Moran has spent over 30 years in the Washington State court system. He currently serves as the Deputy Court Administrator for Pierce County. Bruce was born and raised in Bremerton. He spent 16 years in the Methow Valley, and moved back to Belfair three years ago. He received his Associates Degree from Olympic College, his Bachelors Degree from Seattle University and his Masters Degree from Eastern Washington University. He and his wife of 30 years, Brenda, share a common concern for the environment. They regularly walk the Theler Wetlands Trails. Both are avid backpackers, cross country skiers, and snowshoers. |  | HCSEG Resouce Team 
| Richard Evans.. is currently Sr. Systems Engineer for SAIC. Dick has worked at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Keyport for 30 years. He serves on the executive, foundation, & funding committees. He has a Bachelors Degree in Meteorology & Oceanography & Masters in Physical Oceanography and Public Administration and is actively involved in HCSEG Board and volunteer functions. Dick served as a HCSEG board member since 2001. | 
| Karen Lippy... is the North Mason lead Science Teacher at the Theler Wetlands Hood Canal Watershed Project Center (currently on sabbatical). She holds a BS Degree in Biology and Physical Sciences from WSU. Karen has been an educational leader and has developed a community service-learning program engaging students in environmental monitoring, research, and restoration. In 2005, Karen was recognized by the WA Dept. of Ecology and received an Environmental Excellence Award due to her work in educating students about their natural world. Karen has been involved with the HCSEG as a board member since 2003. | 
| Butch Boad... currently works as a real estate agent. Butch has been a active member of the HCSEG and has previously served as both our Board President and Vice-President. Currently, Butch serves on the education, auction, finance, and habitat committees. Butch has been involved with the HCSEG as a board member since 1994. | 
| Deb Triplett-Gillum... currently works at the Keyport Naval Undersea Warfare Center where she is involved with Strategies Environmental Research and Development. She serves as liaison between HCSEG and the U.S. Navy. and is on HCSEG's public relations committee. Deb has been involved with the HCSEG as a board member since 2000. |
