Wild Salmon Incubators

 (Remote Site Incubators)

In the 1970's the Department of Fisheries was working on developing a useable remote site incubator. Many of these early incubators were gravel boxes of marine plywood. They were cheap to build, but the process of installing them was expensive. This was because of the weight of the gravel and other equipment that was needed. In 1984 it was determined many of the remote site incubators of the 1970's were deteriorating and would need to be replaced. Then Jerry Manuel, in 1985-86, developed a Remote Site Incubation Barrel. This RSI was light, portable, and easy to maintain. This proved to be much less expensive because less time and effort was put into maintaining them. It also had good results with low egg and fry mortality compared to earlier RSI's.
